It's a new month... time for some new bug fixes!
While Matt is still working on harnessing the book data that we all have contributed to, and making it available for searches, he's also been rather busy fixing other things, and even adding some nifty little features. Read all about it in this Announcements forum post.

By Gaslight by Steven Price - Good

William Pinkerton is on the trail of a shadowy figure from his father's past: Edward Shade. He's in Victorian London with all its atmospheric fog, gloom and deprivation. The woman he thinks holds a clue to Shade's whereabouts runs from him and throws herself into the Thames - eventually bits of her body are recovered and Pinkerton thinks he's at a dead end. But then he comes across the woman's ex-lover: Adam Foole. Together (and separately) they search the sewers and opium dens, drawing rooms and seance halls to find the answers.

But it's much more than that. Slowly but surely we learn each man's back story, their childhoods, their involvement in the American Civil War and their lives to this point in time until it all becomes clear.

Very clever book, but 731 close type pages took some time to work through. At the time I thought it needed editing down, but on reflection it was worth the effort.

Some things did amuse me - unintentionally. It's written by a Canadian about Americans in London so I expected that it wouldn't use English words exclusively. It still gave me a moment when the dapper and proper English detective was said to be in his office in his vest.... yep, waistcoat - but I did laugh when I realised.

Well, I did like this at first, but then I felt as if I was reading and reading and reading and not getting anywhere. :/ I'm not sure if it really needed to be this long. It's a shame as I thought the author had some great plot ideas.
