It's the end of a long, dry summer in Turtle Valley, British Columbia, and a raging forest fire sends flames raining down from the tops of the surround hills to the farms in the valley below. Kate, lonely and exhausted in her marriage to a man who has been changed by a stroke, returns to the family home to help her frail parents prepare to evacuate.
